This scene was inspired by Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series. I started playing around with Terragen and came up with the basic landscape. Ever since I read the Dark Tower series first back in high school I've never been able to get the image of a thinny over a lake, or a door on a lake, out of my head. So, the idea of a thinny making approach to the door dangerous...but would walking through the door be more dangerous?

All references to The Dark Tower, Roland, gunslingers, thinny, the man in black, and other elements of the world of The Dark Tower copyright Stephen King. If you haven't bought and read all 7 novels, go do it now! They're worth the cost :D

Terrain and thinny representation by me.

Bonus points if you can actually see the doorknob ;)

There on the other side of the lake was yet another door. But what could this one be for? The Three had already been drawn. Surely this doesn't lead to the Tower? Yet again, a door where no door should be, and yet there it is.

And what is that...thing...out on the lake? It doesn't look like a thinny, it's too colourful and solid and...too there. But there's that damned warbling sound, like a musical saw. Yes, it may not look like one, but there isn't much doubt that the thing before them is a thinny. But why is it so different? Could this be another sign of the Tower's failing force?

And what of that black figure straight ahead?

Thanks, I'm glad you think so :) And thanks for the stock, it wasn't easy finding an old door with a name plate or mail slot near the top.

Hehe I've always wanted to see someones representation of a thinny. Cool. I like the image and especially the dark spot above one of the mountains... is it the tip of the dark tower or Walter?
:iconjgoguen:
It's less of how I would represent the thinny as portrayed in Roland's flashback and more of how one might appear if the world continued to unravel. Strange things have already happened, maybe the thinny rising into the air is next. Or is the thinny in the water and what's in the air the reflection... ;) The dark spot is intended to be Walter, although I've considered doing a Dark Tower image. If only I could find a rose image I like enough, and whether or not to draw my own tower, and do I show the Crimson King... it'll be a bit before I get that far I think :) These books fascinate me, there's no end of good reference material in them.
